Simplify My Life

Simple pleasures are the last refuge of the complex
-Oscar Wilde

Hi, let me introduce myself. I’m Bruce Rawson, a forty something male trying to make sense of life, what I enjoy and most importantly what makes me happy. Call it a midlife crisis- but after 20 years with a professional focus on a career in the Sports, Exercise and Allied Health Profession - I’ve fairly abruptly come to the realization that I’m not defined by my career and/or my success (or otherwise) in my chosen profession……..To many this is an obvious statement - those who have realized that “we work to live, not live to work”  thus organizing their lives and priorities accordingly and reaping the rewards of a “balanced life”. But how did I get so far from having balance in my life?

Call it a culmination of factors- an injury that couldn’t be ignored, a son who asked “does Daddy live on the plane?”, a growing weariness of constant work with little chance of time for family, home and most importantly myself- but suddenly I’ve found myself re-evaluating the role of work in my life, the importance of friends and family and the importance of “self” in modern society.

Join me in my blog as I examine what “defines me”, consider “work-life balance” and examine my fascination with gadgetry and modern “technological tools” (supposedly designed to make life easier- but in reality making me a slave to email, txt and phone above my family and friends). Im hoping to turn things around, learn to relax, enjoy the simple things in life, pursue simplicity above complexity and appreciate and acknowledge those close to me.  Along the way I’ll share my thoughts and experiences, discuss simplicity, health, exercise, work-life balance and those things closest to me. I’m looking to answer my own question - “what defines me”……. Hopefully you’ll be able to answer “what defines you?”
