Rastovich Kayaks Reach Bondi Beach | The Outside Blog
Surfer and Cetacean activist Dave Rastovich, along with surfer/artist Chris Del Moro, musician Will Conner, activist Howie Cooke, and photographer Hilton Dawe, completed their epic kayak trip from Byron Bay to Bondi Beach, reports Surfersvillage.com. The trip, which is part of the “Transparentsea” campaign done by Rastovich’s group Surfers for Cetaceans, aimed to draw attention to the Australian government’s lack of action on Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. The group also made stops to clean up beaches and highlight environmental concerns for Australian’s eastern seaboard.

I applaud Dave and friends for their efforts. As a keen surfer, but indeed as one who enjoys the water I am deeply worried about the state of our oceans. Perhaps one of the most concerning aspects for me is something I only became aware of earlier this year, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch. I find this an absolutely horrendous outcome of our reliance on plastic. It certainly makes me think about our ‘disposable’ society and all of those single use plastic bottles used to sell water and sports drink!
